Proposition 8.2 (Universal property of the inverse limit). Let Y be a set and suppose maps fn:Y→Xn form a compatible cone: ρn+1,n∘fn+1=fnfor every n. There is a unique map f:Y⟶nlimXn such that πn∘f=fn for every coordinate projection πn. If the spaces are topological and every fn is continuous, then f is continuous.
